Travel cage.
Manau goes everywhere with us.
Her stand had to be removed and her cage placed in the lounge instead,
with her ladder resting on the arm of the sopha.
She was shivering on the stand and sitting too still,
I felt she was unhappy and unstable there.
She was no longer able to negotiate the ladder up and down from the floor.
Her perches in her cage are now down to an inch off the bottom,
she could not balance herself higher up in the cage, causing falls and injuries to her wings when flapping to rebalance.
It takes a great deal of dedication to look after a PBFD bird.
It is not something to take on lightly.
It is very demanding and time consuming.
I wouldn't have done it any other way none the less.
The 4 essentials:
Food
Water
Warmth
A vet you trust
Food: You must ensure that at all times your bird can actually eat what you give it.
Soft foods, hand split seed even small bird variety seed can be used.
Water: Drinking from a normal bowl is impossible if the beak is affected. Train your bird to drink from a bottle, you are then assured that it can get enough to drink at it's own leisure.
Warmth: It is imperative that your bird is kept warm at all times, even in summer, air conditioning units, night time cooling off can all chill the PBFD sufferer.
Company: The PBFD bird hates to be alone, they feel terribly insecure, we took our bird everywhere in a travel cage.
On holidays, even if I was going to family to visit for the day, she went with me.
Sores and Dry Skin: Have a bottle of betadine on hand for any new breaks that bleed.
I used a solution of water and pure aloe vera mixed together in a spray bottle which I misted on her daily to help with the dry skin and itchyness.
Veterinary Care:
Is a must, find a Vet you are comfortable with, that knows about birds.
Your bird will need regular beak trims, as often as every 4 weeks,
towards the end, possibly every 2 weeks.
Secondary Infections: Be aware of this, if your bird becomes listless, feels hot to the touch, is not eating and drinking as it normally does, suspect a secondary infection.
Living a Normal Life: Yes they can and a very good one in a loving home. Manau was our treasure, we loved her dearly. You just need to accommodate some of their special needs, I made a small ladder which allowed her the freedom of walking on the floor and the ability to get back to her perch, then later her cage and finally to come to the arm of the sofa to give cuddles and kisses.
Something she dearly loved to do everyday.
"Her stand had to be removed and her cage placed in the lounge
instead, with her ladder resting on the arm of the sopha.

Allowing freedom and mobility to the end.
Thick foam was placed underneath the ladder in case of a fall.
